Antique Italian Walnut Trunk / Cassone
The cassone (coffer or trunk) was an Italian innovation during the 15th century,
principally in Florence. It featured various hand-carved motives from nature, animal
or human origin and more. Often the feet were lion’s or other animal’s paws, and
they were used for a variety of decorative and storage purposes.
This particular antique Italian cassone has been hand carved out Italian walnut wood
and dates to the late 1800’s.
The top is plain and the sides are also plain with the bottom carved motif around.
The hand-carved motives on the front panel are composed of flower heads, and a
linear moulding surrounding it with leaf.
All this rests upon two lion’s paw feet on front. The interior is clean, with a mix of old
boards. From Italy, this wonderful cassone will provide added storage and decoration
anywhere in the home.

Antique Italian Hand-carved Walnut Savonarola Chair
The Savonarola chair is a type of folding seat, complete with back and arm rests, whose
structure is made up of several wooden slats overlapping to form an X shape.

The chair rests on base rails.
The Savonarola armchair got its name in the 19th century – from a 15th-century Dominican
friar named Girolamo Savonarola (1452 – 1498), whose “Savonarola” chair still sits in his
chamber in San Marco convent in Florence.
The curule chair from which the designed is derived once served as the seat upon which
powerful Roman magistrates were entitled to sit; in fact, the only decisions regarded as
lawful were those given from this chair, as ratification of power. The seat was also practical,
because it could be folded and thus was easily moveable – an especially important feature
on the battlefield, where time and speed were of the essence.
The pair of Italian Walnut Savonarola folding chair have a nicely carved back with floral
motives and fold for easy storage.
